a poem for Groundhog Day

first light
rays filled with hope
disco ball dazzle
across the new snow
with a yawn
and a stretch
he awakens
wonders about
the commotion
sniff
scratch
breathe
go in search of
breakfast
silence
the morning chill
on the nose
and then
what's this
what light casts
shadows around
a roar
a cheer
a gasp from the crowd
six more weeks
of winter
